Red Devils staying up in 2019
Redlands United have secured their spot in the NPL Queensland for 2019 after defeating reigning Champions Western Pride 2-1 at Briggs Road.
For Redlands coach Nick Dibbs it was a fantastic moment for not only the players but the whole club.
"I always believed we could do it and it was an absolutely outstanding performance tonight," Dibbs said.
"Everyone pulled together and did their job, I couldn't be happier for the players and the club as a whole because it's what we deserve.
"It has been a tough year, I think we have used 35-40 players in the senior team, again for me, I know we've avoided relegation and I've said it over and over again, whether it be forced, circumstances or resources, I'm just so pleased we've been able to put some of our young players into the team," he said.
It was confirmed minutes after fulltime that Brisbane Strikers had defeated North Queensland United 1-0 in Townsville, which meant that the battle for relegation was over and United along with Sunshine Coast are headed for QPL in 2019.
It was only two weeks ago that Redlands had the heartbreaking loss to North Queensland, and it was the game that started the battle for relegation.
"As much as it did hurt, I think it was the catalyst which spurred the team to life and the young boys led by example," Dibbs said.
Pride were still playing to ensure they secured a home semi-final with third place Olympic FC right on their tales but a freak injury to goalkeeper Max Davidson last round and a number of suspensions proved to be the fatal blow.
After a scoreless first half, which was a physical contest between both teams and Redlands having a few close chances on goal, the second half provided to be full of excitement and heart pumping moments.
The traveling Redlands supporters erupted when Shuto Kuboyama found the back of the net before adding another goal minutes later.
Pride were looking to consolidate second spot on the ladder and had a late fight back but the young Redlands defence held out to bring home the win.
Redlands will finish out the 2018 season at the Cleveland Showgrounds against Premiers Lions FC on Friday at 7pm.
