STRIKERS EDGE PAST RED DEVILS
Redlands United found their feet at the first home game of 2019 season on Saturday night, narrowly missing out on the 3 points, going down to Brisbane Strikers 2-1.
In what was a highly anticipated match, Redlands were out to show the locals what the new line up was made of.
Friday night’s game saw newly appointed head coach Cleberson Souza Santos exhibit the potential within the tea, missing out by the narrowest of margins.
With an exceptional midfield, Redlands saw new signing Fernando Perez lead from the back, getting the ball forward without significant contest.
A magnificent finish from Mario Perkic in the 34th minute put Redlands firmly in the lead.
Redlands continued to contest the remainder of the half going into the break 1-0.
A goal from Striker’s key forward Zach Maltby found the back of the net with a scramble in the goal square catching Jack Richards off his line in the 51st Minute, and a second in the 84th Minute by Andy Pengelly, rounded out full time, Strikers taking the 3 points 2-1.
Souza Santos was pleased with the way the team played, saying the team had really come together over the preseason to deliver a solid Round 2 result. “We’re eagerly awaiting the return of Murillo Gomez in Round 5, who will boost the forward line and see our technical game really take the team to the next level”, he said.
Also of note were long time Redlands players Connor McAuley, Toby Hughes and Igor Sao Jose keen to make their mark in the senior squad.
Brisbane Strikers finally moved past their less than stellar record of another early season loss away from home, taking the win which has been a challenge, losing the first game in the past 7 NPL seasons in the first match away from Perry Park.
