This Saturday, 24 February, Redlands United will be venue hosting the Annual Women's Legends Cup with the 2017 winners Leftovers.
This event started in 2016 to raise funds for a chosen charity and to also provide a pre season tournament for the Brisbane Women's Legends Competition (Over 30's).
Slacks Creek and Redlands United were declared joint winners in 2016. Slacks Creek hosted last year's event with Leftovers proving victorious. (Leftovers is a team formed from a number of players from various clubs).
This year sees Leftovers team up with Redlands United to co-host this wonderful event with the chosen charity being Heartkids. 8 babies are born every day with a heart defect in Australia. That is almost 3000 babies a year. No family should face this alone. #8toomany.
This charity was chosen as it is one very close to the two organisers hearts (yes, pun intended). Redlands United player Debbie Butler's eldest granddaughter Annabella was born almost 10 weeks premature with a Patent Ductus Arteriosus and after close monitoring for 4 years, it closed naturally without surgical intervention. Leftovers player Suwati Lowth's eldest son Callum was born with a Coarctation of the Aorta and
Bicuspid Valves and required open heart surgery at just 5 days old and then again at 2 years of age. Both children are now 11 and 12 respectively and fighting fit.
The day will kick off at 3.00pm with 12 teams from all over Brisbane fighting for the title and the right to host in 2019. There are teams competing who usually play in the Women's divisional competition but have come together in support of this popular and worthwhile charity day.
There are 8 fabulous raffle prizes to be won including grocery hampers, Marriott accommodation voucher, $100 visa card, meat tray, fruit tray and wine. The raffle will be drawn just before the final at 8.00pm so come down to see some great football, buy some raffle tickets and Heartkids merchandise.
