Redlands Overcome Southside Eagles

Redlands United had to overcome a gutsy and resolute Southside Eagles 1-0 on Easter Sunday, away from home, to pick up a valuable 3 points and move to second on the ladder.

Redlands United made the short trip to Bulimba to play Southside Eagles in their Round 3 catch-up fixture in the Football Queensland Premier League (FQPL).

As soon as the match commenced the Red Devils started dominating possession but Eagles’ scrambling dogged defense kept them at bay.

After only 3 minutes Ryan Hughes was brought down out-wide presenting Redlands with their 1st free kick opportunity. The ball was sent into the Eagles penalty area where the ball was ricocheted around the packed area to finally be cleared out by Eagles. This set the scene for the 1st half.

The Red Devils moved the ball around trying to spread the defense with their usual speed and one touch movement, and dominated possession in the 1st half.

Eagles were reduced to making a couple of counter attack raids but Redlands Goalkeeper Ryan Govan was never really challenged. However for all their possession the Red Devils were unable to add to the scoreboard as Eagles scrambling defense were able to hold out the visitors.

The score remained nil all at the half time break.

The Red Devils started the 2nd half as they had finished the 1st, continually pressuring the Eagles goal.

However as the half progressed Eagles showed more determination and doggedness and gradually started to earn more and more possession.

On 58 minutes Redlands were caught napping in the defensive line as a bouncing ball was headed into the path of an Eagles striker who headed for goal only to have his shot blocked by the fast retreating Angus Broderick. The resultant corner was met by a leaping Eagles head only to see it go wide of the posts. Eagles were back on equal grounds in terms of possession and creating more and more scoring opportunities with Redlands stoic defense standing firm.

As the half progressed the game moved end to end. Redlands were put under pressure all over the park but held firm. On 80 minutes Redlands moved the ball across the Eagles goal mouth where an unmarked Deanne Alterio made no mistake to score his 1st goal for the Red Devils, and give them the lead.

The goal only spurred Eagles to push for an equalizer and the game moved into end to end action but Redlands held firm and the Red Devils collected 3 valuable points for a 1-0 victory.

After the match Redlands Head Coach Graham Harvey was happy with the win and how the team stuck to their task and commented, “Boys stuck at it, had to dig deep against a resolute Eagles team. Happy to get three points away from home, and to be back at home next weekend.”

Redlands Man of the Match was announced as our number 11 Ryan Hughes.

After a busy few games on the road the Red Devils will now be back at home at the Compass Grounds in Cleveland as they prepare to host Ipswich Knights in their Round 7 fixture next Saturday 23 April at 6pm with the Under 23’s at 3.45pm.
