Redlands United Commence Pre-Season

Last Saturday Redlands United commenced their preparations for the 2022 Football Queensland Premier League (FQPL) season when they played host to Broadbeach FC.

Redlands coaching staff, as is the case in pre-season games, rotated their players, taking the opportunity to look at players in game situations and trying out different combinations and formations.

Despite some good solid play the Red Devils found themselves 2 goals down during the 1st half after 2 long range chips over the scrambling keeper. The Red Devils narrowed the margin before the break through a well worked play from Ryo Emoto down the right who crossed deep to find James Piercy coming in at the far post, who calmly headed in for Redlands 1st goal. At the half time break the visitors held a 2-1 advantage.

The 2nd half was a different situation as the Red Devils came out and straight from the start played a fast high tempo game, pressuring Broadbeach and not giving them time to settle on the ball. The Red Devils were creating more chances however, desperate defense and some good goalkeeping kept the home side at bay.

However, a Ryo Emoto cross into the box caught the arm of a defender. Emoto stepped up and drilled home the penalty to level the scores.

The Red Devils continued to press on and were awarded a free kick just over 25 meters out from goal. Redland’s skipper Sam Langley stepped up and drilled it home giving the keeper no chance. Redlands took the lead 3-2. The Red Devils continued to push forward and the scoreline could have been more except for some great saves made by the Broadbeach Keeper. Redlands United ran out winners at full time 3-2.

After the game Redlands United Head Coach Graham Harvey commented on the game.

Tonight’s game was a useful first hit out with many players getting their first competitive minutes since last season.

I was a little disappointed with our first quarter of the game but as the game progressed we found some structural discipline. Our ball retention was good however we have a lot of work to do to play with purpose. Nice to get a win but I would describe it as C-.

Importantly at this stage of the season this game gives me first impressions of players and how they are shaping up. As I said to the players this is not pre season, tonight was the first game of 2022 for us. Looking forward to another week on the training pitch to implement ideas and have a bit more running into the players!!”.

Next Saturday the Red Devils are at home once again as they taken on fellow FQPL side Ipswich Knights at the Compass Grounds, Cleveland as they continue their pre-season preparations. The game kicks off at 5pm with the Under 23’s at 3pm and Under 18’s at 1pm. This will be a good test for the Red Devils and a chance to test the waters against a fellow FQPL side but the Red Devils are in form and will be up for the challenge.
